TEN CITIES: OCTA PUSH and BATIDA, JUST A BAND, CAMP MULLA and Berlin’s OREN GERLITZ Head To Nairobi
A Project From The Goethe Institute Exploring Club Cultures In Africa And Europe.
With the success of recent exchanges in LUANDA, LAGOS and JOHANNESBURG, the Goethe Institute is now preparing for its next leg of the tour of the innovative TEN CITIES project. Designed to join the dots between European and African electronic music and to gain an unprecedented insight into global music and club culture, TEN CITIES next stop is Nairobi at the end of April, bringing Lisbon’s OCTA PUSH and BATIDA, Nairobi’s own JUST A BAND, CAMP MULLA and Berlin’s OREN GERLITZ.

February saw Ukraine’s Vakula and Dubmasta make the trip from Eastern Europe to Johannesburg to team up with Dirty Paraffin, enabling them to craft groundbreaking new music influenced by their incredibly diverse combined musical backgrounds. With a whole range of different approaches, from the devastating deep house of the Ukraine from Vakula and master of sound exploration Dubmasta, to the shambeez visual, performance art outfit  Dirty Paraffin alongside Berlin’s Hannes Teichmann. A number of guest musicians also contributed to proceedings including Moonchild, Gamebouy (13 year old rapper, widely regarded in the South African scene), the jazz band Planet Lindela, and the smooth house sounds of  Tito Zwane Pulling Strings. The artistic output outstripped the already high bar set previously by this genre-spanning project.
As TEN CITIES moves onto Nairobi, Kenya from the 14th April – 1st May, the next group of artists make plans for the next meeting of musical minds. Making the trip from Lisbon, Portugal, are Octa Push and Batida, with Berlin’sOren Gerlitz will be joining them out there. Octa Push are the pairing of Dizzycutter and Mushug, jointly responsible for pioneering bass music at the end of last decade. Forging a unique blend of dubstep, grime, UK garage and Baltimore house, Octa Push have a myriad of influences to draw upon when crafting their aural expositions. Fellow countryman Batida utilises his own Angolan heritage to marry traditional Angolan music from the 1970s with modern electronic compostions. With this pedigree in blending African and European culture, Batida will play an instrumental role in the project. Completing the European contingent is Oren Gerlitz of Jahcoozi. Using the knowledge gained whilst performing with one of the most notorious bass acts on the planet, Gerlitz will bring his own extensive knowledge of bass music, garage, dubstep, techno, house, ragga and footwork to the proceedings.

Welcoming the group to Kenya will be natives Just A Band and Camp Mulla. Having been awarded the auspicious accolade of being the first East African group to top the charts on MTV Base, Camp Mulla is a group rooted in hip-hop, whilst utilising influences from house and electro to enable a remarkably fresh take on productions. Just A Band are a band who actively employ new sounds and techniques to create intricate experimentations and full bodied tracks. With a strong interest in visual artistry as well, Just A Band will ensure that the performance lives up to the occasion.

Oren Gerlitz and Bill Sellanga of Just A Band will be curating the Nairobi exchange, culminating in a club event and two gigs to make this leg of the TEN CITIES project another stand out effort in pushing the boundaries and merging the soundscapes of the two continents.
