Set in an idyllic private domaine in the French countryside 1h30 drive from Toulouse airport, Monticule Festival has in its 4 years of existence become an event to bookmark in the French summer festival calendar. With an intimate capacity, it still feels like a well-guarded secret, but with its expertly curated lineup and superb range of holiday activities on offer, we doubt it will stay a secret much longer.

The centerpiece of the festival is of course the music. Set across 4 stages that range from a pool stage to a barn, a main stage in the forest and an ambient dome, Monticule brings over some of the best names from the wider electronic community for 5 days of partying, from June 19th – 23rd 2019. Hailing from Munich, the Zenker Brothers will make their triumphant return to the Domaine de Gayfié as will Malka Tuti label bosses Asaf Samuel & Katzele. Fans of chugging, psychedelic techno will be served to their heart’s delight with first time appearances by Berliners Sascha Funke, Fantastic Twins and Curses as well as Lithuanian master Manfredas. French specialists Low Jack, Simo Cell and Oko DJ will be flying the flag for all forms of bass and dusty curios. German talent is particularly well represented with the likes of Dima Oboukhov, Fog Puma, RSS Disco or San Quentin making the trip, and plenty more headliners and heavy hitting up-and-comers will be announced in due course.

Plenty of extra-curricular activities are on offer over the course of the 5 days of Monticule. From festival classics such as yoga, painting workshops and a skateboard mini ramp, to horse riding in the areas adjacent forests, astronomy lessons and a beautiful clear-watered waterfall and swimming hole accessible by a short walk from the festival or with the help of a trusty donkey shuttle.
The area around the festival is widely celebrated for its cuisine and wines, all of which will feature abundantly over the course of the festival thanks to local producers and food trucks filling stomachs and surpassing expectations.
5 day tickets for Monticule Festival start from 115€ + booking fee. 3 days weekend ticket and group tickets also available.

In 800 AC monks settled down at the foot of this hill. Ruins on the elevation nearby the Spring of Lantouy, give us an idea of a harmonic spiritual life in nature. Many years after the monks, lord Gayfié installed a farm on the hill and constructed several buildings which are still standing to this day: the barn (Grange), his villa, the pigsty (porcherie) and the sheepfold (bergerie). After his passing, the Domaine de Gayfié was home to a horse farm, a truffle plantation and, pretty close to our presence, St. Etienne Football Club. Luckily for us, the guy in charge of managing the construction of 200 bungalows and an elevator down the hill, took all the money and defected to Mexico.

In 1991, after many years of being left untouched, the tourist Residence Domaine de Gayfié was installed and in 2001, Lilo finally took over the place. In 2015, her son Richard and his greenhorn friends decided to organise a slightly oversized home party with Funktion Ones and international booking on top of that hill and called it Monticule Festival. When you read these lines the fifth edition will already be in the making. The baby has grown a bit. Let’s take a breath to worship the time and space which was given to us. We are all just particles on this ground. Maybe the monks are coming back soon.

“The idea of Monticule was always to create a festival, where we would like to go ourselves. Quality not quantity is our the credo and so it’s not just the music selection, but also the stages, drinks, workshops and atmosphere that follow our “tailor-made” line. Our aim is to make people’s souls and bodies feel better when they leave the festival than before they arrived” – Eric Schönemeier [Monticule]

“Finally we get to play a festival with a nice lineup […] Monticule is one of the best curated festivals we’ve played in a while” – FJAKK

“I generally don’t like festival, as you spend time walking from one tuna can to another and generally see the same acts. I’ve been playing Monticule for 3 years and it remains among my best experiences as a DJ, with such a receptive crowd.
The team, the amazing location, the fact that it’s a human sized event and that everything is built on the spot, crafted in the best way.
And then there’s the sound, brought from Munich, it’s just exceptional which for a DJ is the most important.
And finally the lineup has always something different to offer compared to the rest.
All of this makes Monticule one of my fave festivals (on the 4 that I like) – Gilb’R [Versatile Records]

“Hug a tree, even if it’s for the first time. Liberate yourself from the awful of evils, embrace musical wilderness while staying calm and surrounded by friends and kindred spirits. It might be the most serene festivals around. Monticule” – Khidja

“I think it’s the best festival of my life” – Antoine Hernandez [Positive Education Festival]

“Plenty of festivals are exhausting. At Monticule, you leave feeling appeased and rich of new musical and human experiences”Trax Magazine
